After you have overcome inertia and have decided that you are going to practice and improve your game, you will need to decide how to place yourself in the right
environment so that learning is automatic. The earlier this is done, the more learning will take place.
Although most of us cannot modify his environment as much, as we would like, we can try to place our self in the best situation that makes it easier for play and practice.
It is best to make a definite time that you are going to play or practice. Just like studying in college. If we set up a certain hour each day and a certain place, it becomes a habit. After the process is performed each day at a certain time and place, and repeated for several days, the habit is formed. Once the habit is formed, the practice can be completed with becoming a problem.
Let me give you a personal illustration. I had the problem of not being able to putt. I either cut or pulled many putts. I bought a putting gadget which enabled me to practice in the house on the carpet. First I put the gadget in a spot where I often saw it. Then I kept a supply of balls on my dresser. I took a putter and placed near the gadget as an reminder and this way I did not have to pull one out of my bag each day. I kept a score sheet to see how many out of each hundred putts were dropping. I made it a habit to putt 24 balls before going to bed each
night. This helped me tremendously.
I use to be a terrible golfer. I had all kinds of trouble hitting tee shots. So I started everyday going to the closest driving range. I made a psychological decision that I was going to hit a straight tee shot. Laying in the bed at
nite, I would close my eyes and see my swing and follow the ball down the fairway. It became very easy to establish the habit of hitting a bucket or two of balls everyday. This made my environment work for me. I just had to get in the car and drive the 3 miles to the driving range.
All of us have our duties that must be accomplished each day. But if we will just look around and focus on our wants, we can find the time to improve our game. There is much that can be done to provide better golfing situations without affecting what the world has come to believe are more important things.
