Apology from Richard;
I want to apologize to all of you that have tried to access my
website during the past couple of months, via a telephone line.
I had no idea that it loaded so slow. Had I known, I would have
had it fixed before now. Please accept my apology and thank
you for your patience. I paid a moron good money to develop
that website, but I should have checked it myself. It should
load
much faster now. Anytime you have a problem with it, I would
like for you to let me know.
Thank you.

Golf is a game played by Americans. We buy our stuff from
American companies. But, the golf shoes I wear are made by
people who wear sandals. The golf clubs I buy are manufactured
by people who can't spell golf and can't afford to participate..
Heck, there probably isn't a course they could access anyway.
I just think there might be a few of us interested enough to
know if there are any American companies actually manufacturing
their wares somewhere in the U.S.
Politically, I suspect you and I are on opposite sides of
the spectrum, yet agree on nearly everything. I wonder if the
president has thought about his daughters cleaning up their acts
and joining the Army Reserve.

Thank you for responding to my golf question. I'm going to the
gym now so I'll focus on my wrists today.
Speaking as a personal trainer for college-level athletes, I have
to ask, do you have any idea how few professional colleagues of
mine (trainers and athletes alike) don't realize that stretching
is not a warm-up? That little esoteric, albeit important, bit of
info in your article tells a lot about the quality of your
advice. I'm looking forward even more now to your yoga/golf
articles.

This weeks Q & A from our resident pro Joe DeLorenzo
Thank you Joe for taking the time to answer these questions for
us.
DEAR RICHARD: LOVE YOUR NEWS LETTERS, I HAVE 2 OF
> YOUR VIDEOS AND IT IS TRUE-
> THE MORE YOU PUT INTO IT,THE MORE YOU GET BACK
> PRACTICE-PRACTICE AND MAKE IT
> A NO BRAINER WHEN YOU PLAY!!!!. I HAVE BEEN PLAYING
> DIFFERERENT BALLS,I HAVE
> FOUND THAT SO FAR THAT THE PRECEPT (laddie)IS THE
> BEST FOR OVER ALL,DISTANCE
> ACCURCY AND PUTTING IS AHEAD-WHAT DO THE REST LIKE
> AND WHY??
Response to the last question on which balls are best:
Ball technology is already pushing the limits of the
velocity specs. All the major manufacturers do not
want to be called illegal by surpassing the specs, so
all of the top of the line ball manufacturers
understand the limits of the specs and are pushing
those limits, so they are all excellent. However, the
mind is a powerful thing, so if your mind tells you
that you play better with a certain brand, you
probably will. I have a friend who used to always
played a common brand, and never broke 90, but then
played the Pro V1 ball and shot 86 two times in a row.
Is the ball really that much better, or is it all in
the mind? Nobody knows, if the Precept Laddie works
for you, go with it. If the Pro V1 works for you, go
with it. If brand Goochi FuFu works for you, that's
great. I personally am a cheapskate. I just use my
ball retriever to get any and all the brands from the
ponds and creeks, experiment with them on the range,
and save the ball money to buy a few extra beers at
the 19th hole.
My problem is too many fat shots !!!

Response to Arik who has too many fat shots:
Your practice swing is good because you never hit a
bad shot with it. You are swinging, not hitting. As
soon as you try to hit, everything changes. Just
execute a swing where the ball just happens to be in
the way of the swing. Other things to watch for are
the backswing making the body sway sideways rather
than turning, and the downswing trying to scoop the
ball up into the air rather than hitting down at the
ball and letting the club do the lifting.

Response to Ty:
Most courses have a marker for 150 yards to the middle
of the green. Callaway makes a good quality set of
clubs, so just trust the distances. If you hit the
8-iron 160, use that club for the 150 distance because
you might not hit it perfect every time. From there,
add or subtract 10 yards per club for the distance
required. Also add or subtract 10 yards per club for
gentle wind, more for stiffer wind. Also add or
subtract 1 club depending on whether the pin is in the
back or the front of the green. You are already
taking note of the distances you get, so just trust
the distances due to your better clubs.
I'm 68 and a weekend player I can't get rid of my
> slice every time I use my
> driver, somebody said that it's never too late to
> learn can you help me. Thank

Response to the 68 year old with the driver slice:
I always get suspicious when someone says they slice
with the driver, but they do not mention the slice
with any other clubs. Assuming you do not slice with
any other clubs, just put some lead tape (available
from your local golf store) on the heel of your
driver. If you do slice with most of your other clubs
as well, then order the Body Golf tape called the
Slice Buster.
what golf ball would be good to play at
4000 feet altitude
thank you Russell Weiss
Response to Russell Weiss:
Wow, you must be a real student of the game to ask a
question like that. I have to assume you are a low
handicap, if you are not a low handicapper, the ball
will not make that much difference, so let's just
assume you are a low handicapper. I do not know what
kind of ball you are already using, but if you use the
same one, it should travel further at higher
altitudes, so just assume 10 more yards per club with
the same ball. If you are using a distance ball,
switch to a high spin ball and maybe you do not have
to make any adjustments for distance. Good luck.
Richard’s Quick Tips:
Take Two and Run
You won’t score well by trying to hole every putt you face. But
you will score well by not three putting.
So unless a putt is within ten to fifteen feet of the hole and
has little or no break, you should focus on getting down in two.
A good way to do this is to imagine the hole is three feet in
diameter. If you can leave your first putt in the imaginary
hole, you should be able to tap your second putt in the real hole
because the putt will measure no more than eighteen inches
(sixteen inches, actually, as the width of the hole is four
inches and change).
Concentrate on the speed of the putt and the tempo of your
motion, and think only of getting close. Consider every two putt
a success and try not to get too worked up about misses, and look
on long one-putts as a bonus.
Improve Your Short Game Indoors
by
Mac Stevenson
If you’re one of the working people and only get to play once or
twice a week, you can improve your short game in the comfort of
your home. This will work for male or female golfers of any age.
This method really works. Your chipping and putting will improve
dramatically; consequently, so will your scores.
The equipment that you will need is both inexpensive and easy to
find. Just a few basic items are required:
* You’ll need a small piece of astro turf carpet that you can
find in a golf shop or carpet store; something close to 2 feet by
3 feet or slightly larger will suffice.
* For chipping, you will need a rounded net that is mounted on a
stand. These are available in golf shops or discount stores.
* Since you don’t want to break any windows, one or two dozen
plastic practice balls will be essential.
* It’s recommended that you buy a throw rug that is close to the
astro turf in thickness so you’ll be chipping off an even lie.
Once you have the training aids, you can practice your chipping
stroke in the comfort of your home at any time of the day or
night. This practice method will transport confidence and a
reliable chipping stroke to the golf course during your weekend
games. You can also practice your putting on the rug, alternating
between that and chip shots.
One of the amazing benefits of this training method is that you
will notice a difference in how comfortable the club feels in
your hand on the golf course--just because you’ve been doing some
indoor practicing at home. This results in increased confidence.
Before you begin practicing chip shots, be certain that you’re
using the proper fundamentals. If you practice with one or two
technique flaws, your efforts will be counterproductive. Bad
habits are implanted and you’ll become worse instead of better.
However, when used correctly, this practice method of chipping
plastic balls off a practice mat into a net will improve your
ability to stroke the vital chip shot.
Before you begin your indoor practice, you should have eight
important fundamentals memorized. And it would be helpful to
write these down on a note card for quick reference. The nine
basic fundamentals are:
(1) Choke down on the chipping club.
(2) Use the Vardon grip with the back of your left hand facing
the target.
(3) Your stance should be 8-12 inches wide and slightly open
(facing to the left of the target for right-handers).
(4) The ball should be played off the back foot. This will vary
on the golf course, depending on the lie. (5) Start your
backstroke with your hands well ahead of the ball.
(6) On the backswing, take the clubhead up fairly steeply so
you’ll hit the ball with a descending arc.
(7) Keep most of your weight on your left foot and leg throughout
the chip shot. (This is for right-handed players, it’s just the
opposite for southpaws.)
(8) Make sure you keep your head absolutely still during the
shot.
The ideal club to practice with is the pitching wedge; however,
you can also use an 8- or 9-iron or a sand wedge. Chip shots
should be hit into the net from two to three feet away.
Here’s a word of warning: The astro-turf practice mat can be too
forgiving if you’re hitting behind the ball. Be sure you are
stroking your indoor chip shots properly-- making contact with
the ball before you strike the turf. If you’re hitting behind the
ball, move your hands further forward and make sure you keep your
head anchored.
This indoor practice method is perfect for busy guys and gals. If
you watch TV, get up and hit chip shots during the commercials.
You can hit 24 chip shots during three commercial breaks. And you
can practice anytime you feel like it, day or night.
Practice very short back swings for delicate chips, and a longer
stroke for imagined 20-30 yard pitch-and-run shots. With plastic
balls, you won’t break any windows if you skull one.
Don’t make work out of this new practice method. You can improve
your short game with 10-30 minutes of indoor practice every day
or every other day.
In door chipping practice will help players of all skill levels;
you’ll learn how to stroke chip shots just like you do putts, and
your newfound skill and confidence will accompany you to the golf
course and lower your scores.
The short game is at least half of the game, and
in most people's cases, more than half. Think of
all of the strokes you may have thrown away around
the greens in the past. Mark takes you through
simple short game fundamentals that will have you
making and saving par, making putts and improving
your game around the greens for a lifetime

Richard’s Thoughts:
If you have some type of health problem, make sure
you consult a doctor
before beginning any exercise program.
Swinging and Exhaling
The swinging action of this exercise rotates the torso and spine,
loosens the muscles of the shoulders and warms the shoulder
joints. This movement serves to bring awareness to the body
regions that are most involved in the golf swing. It brings heat
to the upper body. When you exhale, say the word “Ha”. This
works the lungs and diaphragm and gives an audible cue for
matching movement and breath, a key feature of mind-body
exercise. The coordination of breath and movement is an
essential part of the entire practice, reminding the you to
breath and nourish the body in play. Forcibly exhaling air
clears the lungs and bronchial tubes.
Begin standing with your feet hip width apart and the knees
slightly bent.
Press into your feet, establishing a connection with the ground.
Inhale and swing your arms loosely to one side.
Exhale with a “ha” sound, through your open mouth, swinging the
arms and torso to the other side.
Remember to keep your hips facing forward, and rotate from the
torso up to look behind you as you swing.
As you progress in the exercise, swing your arms higher and with
more energy.
When your warm-up is complete, gradually slow the movements until
stopped.
Repeat these 21 times to the left and 21 times to the right.
Let me know what you think of this stuff!
Until next week…good golfing!
