since I have you tapes and mark's teaching they are a bright spot in
my golf world. I have lowered my handicap and am looking too go lower

is saying on the short game and sand traps, which is killing me right
now. Keep up the great work you and mark are doing. I am sure I am
speaking for more then myself out there in this golf world.

Richard;

As a rule of thumb what irons are best for what distances?

Thanks

Richard
great articles today, I liked the tip about the practice swings and
getting tired out, as well as the Q&As... by the way, I keep a diary, very
similar to your suggestions. I like to read back on my "break throughs", and
make sure I still incorporate them weeks later. It's nice to see my
progress as well over the months, and years.
thanks

Questions and Answers this week for our resident Pro Joe DeLorenzo:

I would like to know how many golf structures teaching) are there? Is the
PGA of the States structure better than the PGA of
Europe? I enjoy reading your material and i wish one day i could have your
knowledge.
I am a professional for two years already and feel
that i have lots too learn. I am teaching beginners but it is a challenge
because in Portugal they think they know it all after 10 lessons. Im
South African and i know how practice is important. I am doing a project on
the following topics: how to teach, how to play, how to manage and product
knowledge. If i have any difficulty may i ask for your help?
Keep in touch
Victor

Response to Victor:

Hello Victor,
Sure, you can ask for help any time. We all have a
lot to learn, golf is a never-ending learning
experience. There is so much information out there,
you have to be careful to select the things that work
for you, because all tips do not work for everyone.
Since you have been a pro for 2 years, I would like to
know which organization you belong to. I would
recommend looking up the World Golf Teacher's
Federation (wgtf.com) because you can affiliate
yourself with any of 35 countries that belong to the
WGTF. I am certified by the USGTF and I found it to
be a wonderful organization, very helpful. They can
help you with all of your questions. I would also
recommend you take a look at the products on the
thinkandreach par web site.

Hello Will,
When you say you tried everything, I'm not sure what
that means, so I will have to make a few assumptions.
If you mean the driver is the only club you slice
with, and you do not slice with any other club, then I
would say it is time to get a different driver, or
just tee off with your fairway wood. If you slice
with other clubs as well, then your swing needs to
change. I would recommend getting the Slice Busting
video available on the thinkandreachpar.com web site.
Joe

Richard's Quick Tips:

When calculating your yardage from the green, at some point you are
going to ask whether the yardage is to the center of the green or to
the front.

But how often do you then calculate according to whether the flag is
positioned in the front, middle, or the back.

Some course make it easy and have smaller flags in the front, middle,
and back position. There could be a very significant difference in
yardage between a front and back position. The difference could be as
much as two or three clubs. Go the extra yard and get the exact
yardage.

A Time to Press--A Time to Pass
by
Mac Stevenson
Press bets on the golf course can become very complicated, depending
on the rules your foursome plays by. A press bet is best understood
when the definition is kept simple: It's a new wager--with no
connection to the original bet--that's made after the golf game is
underway. The purpose of the press bet is to give the guys who are
losing a chance to get even.

Depending on who you play with, a press bet can be made on the second
hole or it can be limited to the 18th hole. The rules have to be
determined on the first tee before the match begins. And the bets can
be team bets or individual matches.

If you're a serious golfer and play in a lot of competitive
tournaments, it's good to play with groups who use the press bet. This
will teach you how to play under pressure. And it's exciting and fun
so long as it doesn't become too personal.

The most traditional press bets include the following:

* You or your team can press when you're dormie (example--two down
with two holes to play) or out (example--two down with one hole to
play) . That means you can make a new bet (press), with the amount the
same as the original wager. The press starts on the next hole and goes
to the final hole. As an example, if you're playing a nine-hole bet
and you press on seven green, the new bet begins on eight tee and goes
through the ninth hole.

* Some golfing groups like to play automatic presses. This gets tense.
Every time a team or individual loses a hole, a press is automatic.
You can come to the 18th hole with five or six bets going, all
undecided. That's pressure.

* It's also considered fair play in some groups to press whenever you
feel like it if you're down on the original bet.

A lot of psychology and common sense goes into the decision as to
whether or not to press. If you're not playing for much money and the
players in your group always press when they're dormie or out, then
there's no decision to make. However, some games are for serious money
and that's when you need to use some unemotional judgment in deciding
whether to press or pull in your horns for the day.

Be realistic about your chances before you decide whether to press or
eat humble pie. How do you feel about your play for the day? Is your
confidence level high or low? Do you know your adversary well? If so,
is he playing his normal game or is he hot? Do presses rattle him, or
does he play even better when the press is on?

Another consideration is the strong and weak points of you and your
opponent on a particular hole. If it's a par three that you're
thinking of pressing on and the guy you're playing is a better iron
player than you, wait for a par four to press. You don't have to press
the moment you're down and eligible to start a new bet.

Golf is a game of streaks, good and bad. If you're going bad, hold off
on the press until you feel better about your game. The worst time to
press is when you've just missed a short putt to go down in a match;
wait until you've pulled yourself back together. And how your opponent
is going is important. If you know he's streaky, don't press him right
after he's made a couple of pars and a birdie. Wait until the
inevitable chink in his armor appears.

There's an old adage among skillful gamblers: Don't throw good money
after bad. That applies to the golf course as well as the card table.
If you're having a bad day and it doesn't feel like it's going to get
any better, pass on the press bet and wait for another day.

Lastly, here's the most important advice about gambling on the golf
course: If you're the big winner for the day, be sure and pick up the
drink and food tab on the 19th hole. That keeps everything friendly,
as it should be.

Richard's Thoughts:
Ernie bought up a good question this week. What kind of distance can
you expect from each. iron?
This is a very often-asked question by many newbies to golf. They
want to know how far they can hit each club. Of course the real
answer depends on many factors: the balls you are using, the clubs
you are using, conditions you are playing under, type of clubs you are
using, your physical condition, gender, age, your swing speed, etc.
Many, many conditions and factors to consider.
But, knowing this is important in everyone's game, regardless of the
stage of advancement. But, you must understand, there are many
factors that can affect your game just as much as the distance you get
off of certain clubs.
Here is a chart that list distances for driver, woods, and irons. You
will see the range is large and great between men and women. And golf
distances never match up, because club distance depends more on the
player than on the clubs.
Club Men Women
Driver 200-230-260 150-175-200
3-wood 180-215-235 125-150-180
5-wood 170-195-210 105-135-170
2-iron 170-195-210 105-135-170
3-iron 160-180-200 100-125-160
4-iron 150-170-185 90-120-150
5-iron 140-160-170 80-110-140
6-iron 130-150-160 70-100-130
7-iron 120-140-150 65-90-120
8-iron 110-130-140 60-80-110
9-iron 95-115-130 55-70-95
PW 80-105-120 50-60-80
SW 60-80-100 40-50-60
Don't compare yourself to the worlds longest hitters. Just compare
yourself to the ones that you play with. And just because you are a
long hitter, doesn't guarantee anything, certainly not a lower golf
score. The main thing to worry about is not how long you hit it, but
how straight you hit it is what matters.
Until next week.good golfing!
