Richard’s Quick Tip:
Score on the Rebound
How often have you seen a golfer roll a put close, watch it creep
just past the hole, and then close his eyes and exhale in
exasperation
as the ball rolls on past the hole?
That golfer just missed a free lesson on how to hit his comeback
putt.
If he had watched the line the ball had rolled on once it passed the
hole, it would have been simple for him to adjust to the line he
needed to hole the comebacker.
The top players know this. They get mad not only when another player
steps on their line, but also when he steps on the area immediately
behind the hole. They know that the worst a good, aggressive putt is
going to leave is an easy comebacker, and they object to others
chewing up the turf and making it the slightest bit difficult.

I would like to get your opinion on something. I generally shoot in
the mid 90’s, am 48 years old, and play golf once a week. What I
want
to know is this. My clubs are 3 years old and I want to get a new
set. What do you recommend and do you think they will improve my
game? Please let me know.
Tim Campbell, Phoenix, AZ
Thanks for the email Tim. If you are shooting in the middle 90’s and
there is nothing wrong with your clubs, you are wasting your money
buying new clubs. You would be much better off investing in
yourself,
than new golf clubs. Sure new clubs are cool, but they will not help
you improve your fundamentals. If you are serious about improving, I
recommend you purchase the Body Golf basic videos and use them. You
need to make a commitment to developing the skills and knowledge to
improve your game. You cannot watch these videos or any other videos
one time and put them on the shelf, and expect them to take 10
strokes
off your game. You will need to watch them, go practice, watch them,
go practice. If you will invest the time and energy into improving
your game, these tapes will help you. If you want to play better
golf…buy the Body Golf 3 School in a box…not a new set of clubs.
Here is the link to purchase these videos. Much cheaper than a new
set of clubs.

This is a question that I have asked Sensei Mark to answer:
Question
Hi Richard,
I have a quick question. Page 26 shows the feet on setup but I'm
wondering if the captions might be under the wrong photos? I just
got
the book a couple weeks ago and have watched the video a couple
times.
My driving has been a miracle! Irons still need work but I'm having
to "empty my cup" so to speak. I've always moved the ball in my
stance, further back for the shorter irons and tried to hit down on
the ball. Now I'm struggling with them and hitting the ground behind
the ball often hitting fat shots that don't go very far. I'm
determined to work it out! Thanks!
Doug
Answer
Doug
Congrats on the good driver hitting.
I'm glad to hear that my program is doing as promised.
Tell all of your friends for us.
OK...so you're hitting the irons fat?
Well...from what I can gather, you're probably so focused on
"hitting
down" that you're mechanics are going out the window.
Remember, with a center set-up you will naturally make contact with
a
descending blow so you don't really need to worry about all of that.
Do this.
Start with your wedge.
Hit it off a driving range mat.
Swing to make contact with only the ball, not the mat.
When you're comfy with doing that, go on to a longer iron.
When you're done doing that, move on to grass practice tee.
Use a tee to practice.
Then, move on to a good grassy area to finish up the session.
But...the main thing that is killing you is the "hitting down"
thing.
Again, the ball-in-the-center set-up makes it happen automatically.
Take care
hope that helps.
Mark Anthony Montaquila

"I bought one of your products - Body Golf. Its a great golf video.
This is what it should be, teaching actual applicable techniques and
ways to improve golf swings. I have seen video that talks about
principle of hitting a ball! that is ridiculous! Why buy a video to
be
convinced? Just read it!
I would recommend this video to anyone."

A Bit of Golf Trivia:
Who won more pro tournaments than any other golfer? (answer is
below)
Joe,
I am 70 yrs.old and 5' 3"and resumed golf after 25 years. My
equipment
isalmost as old as I am. I wish to buy new irons and woods. Do I
need
graphiteshafts and should they be adjusted for my height? At the
moment I am
notgetting any distance. I would be grateful for any help.
Bob Ivinson
Hello Bob,
Yes, I think anyone who is going to buy new clubs should get
properly
fitted, or else your new clubs might not work very well for you.
Graphite shafts are not an absolute necessity, but they might help,
depending
on how you swing. Try to visit a store that has a computerized
hitting bay
where you hit into a video screen and it tells you how many yards
your shot
would have traveled, it shows you the ball flight, hooks or slices,
and
launch angles. Then you can more easily compare results with
different types
of clubs.
Joe
Joe,
Are we supposed to leave rakes inside the sand traps or outside the
traps?
Andrea
Hi Andrea,
There is no requirement either way. Some courses recommend one or
the
other. If you leave the rake in the trap, you make it easier for the
guys who mow the grass. If you leave it outside the trap, you make
it
easier for the next person to use (or to trip over). Most courses
prefer to leave
them in the sand.
Joe
Joe,
i am 13 and i would like to know which is the best make of golf ball
and golf club
david
Hi David,
Annika likes Calloway, Phil likes Titleist, Tiger likes Nike,
Padraig
likes Wilson, Vijay likes Cleveland, lots of pros like Ping, and
many other
brands. Pick your favorite pro and use what they use. All the major
brands of balls and clubs are pushing the limits of technology, so
there is
no single brand that stands out over all the others. You will see
from
magazines and web sites ("what's in my bag") that the clubs used by
the pros are many different brands. If cost is not an issue, and you
want to
play your very best, get custom fitted whenever you buy clubs. Some
people
still think new technology is a big advantage, but if that is true,
why is
it that the average scores for all golfers have not improved for
many years?
Think about it, it's just a stick with a hunk of metal on the end.
Since you
are still young and growing, I would not invest a lot of money at
this
time because you will be outgrowing your clubs often. If you do not
have a
lot of money, you can still do very well by getting second-hand
clubs from
used equipment stores or even from flea markets and garage sales.
Try them
at a practice range and if they don't work, just keep trading them
in for
other sets. Some of these sets are surprisingly good even if they
look a
little beat up. And if you want to save money on balls, just get a
ball
retriever and walk along some of the water holes on any course, and
you will
never have to buy balls again, and you will have many brands to
choose from
and decide which is best for you.
Joe
Joe,
About 6 weeks ago I was playing well before we went on vacation, in
fact I was on the verge of breaking 80 at our home course and played
well
while on vacation, but as soon as we got back from vacation it was
like I left
my swing on the plane to go somewhere else? For some reason I have
started hitting everything with my shoulders instead of with my arms
and
hands. I know by bringing my shoulders through first it leads to a
direct pull
or a serious slice, and I notice now that since I'm not swinging
through
I'm also hitting off my back foot. I know what I'm doing, but I
can't stop
swinging with my shoulders, can you help?
Chad
Hello Chad,
Everyone has their own favorite swing thoughts, but sometimes they
get
in the way. In your case, I see no reason why your shoulders, arms,
and
hands cannot work together rather than separately. Do the double
clubber
drill as shown in the Body Golf videos, and you will feel a flowing
motion
starting from the lower body followed by the shoulders, arms, and
then the
hands. Delay the wrist break as long as possible. Make sure you
start the
downswing with the lower body, that way you are less likely to hit
off the back
foot.
Joe
Question for the Evil Twin:
Jody, which is more strict, the Rules of Golf or The 10
Commandments?
Answer: We had better hope "Thou Shalt Not Kill" is not interpreted
by the USGA. It would be a penalty very time you take a divot,
because you
are killing grass. You usually have to kill whatever food you are
eating,
even fruits and veggies are a form of life. So I guess in order to
avoid a
penalty you would have to starve. Also, don't ever kill any
mosquitoes, roaches, ants, spiders or any other kind of bug, just
let them bite
you and give you all kinds of diseases, or else, as in the Rules of
Monopoly,
you will be handed a card that says "go to Hades, go directly to
Hades, do
not pass Go, do not collect $200."
Answer to the above Trivia question - Who won more pro tournaments
than any other golfer? Kathy Whitworth(88), Mickey Wright(82), Sam
Snead(81),
Jack Nicklaus(70), Ben Hogan(63), Arnold Palmer(60), Patty Berg(60),
Louise
Suggs(58), Betsy Rawls(55), Byron Nelson(52).

Golf Potpourri
by
Mac Stevenson
Tournament Talkers are Boorish
It’s that time of year when many of us are playing in season-ending
club tournaments or city tournaments. And that means you are serious
about playing your best-possible golf. If you draw a Tournament
Talker
to play with, that will be Mission Impossible.
What’s a Tournament Talker? Basically, he’s a guy who’s completely
oblivious as to what’s going on around him. The TT doesn’t have a
clue
and he invariably has a voice that carries like a foghorn. And when
he’s not jabbering while you’re trying to hit a full shot, he’s
wandering around aimlessly in the line of your chip shots or putts.
If you’re unlucky enough to have to play with a TT occasionally,
it’s
not so bad during a casual round. But in a tournament--when you’re
grinding and tense anyway--a TT can completely destroy your
concentration and disposition. It’s hard enough to keep from letting
normal sounds distract you without having a compulsive talker in
your
foursome.
The worst of all are the stop-and-goers. When you think they’ve shut
up, you begin your backswing and they start yapping again as you’re
right at the top of your swing. When you go ahead and hit a good
shot,
you think how good your concentration is. But if you hit a bad shot,
you’ll blame the TT and get so mad it will throw you clear off your
game. It doesn’t bother some golfers, but for most of us it’s
distracting and destroys our focus.
What can you do to get the Tournament Talker to put a muzzle on it
while you’re hitting a shot? There are several possible solutions:
(1) If someone who knows the TT is playing with you, a diplomatic
method is to politely ask him to act as an intermediary and tell
Motor
Mouth that it bothers you when he’s talking while you’re trying to
hit
a shot. Sometimes that works.
(2) You can back away from your shot and give the obnoxious clod a
stare to let him know he’s ruining the game. The problem here is
that
usually they’re so stupid and self-centered they don’t catch the
hint.
(3) The direct approach is often the only thing that works; you
simply tell the guy he’s bothering the hell out of you by talking
while you’re trying to hit a shot. However, when you reach this
stage
you’ll be so mad that you’ll lose your concentration for several
holes
and the day’s ruined.
(4) An alternate to number three is to tell the guy that you like
to visit as much as the next guy between shots, but that it
irritates
you a lot when someone is talking while you try and play serious
golf.
Then tell him you’ll show him the same courtesy if he’ll shut it up
while you hit.
If none of these methods work, you’ll just have to suffer through an
unpleasant round. No one wants to start a golf tournament with hopes
of playing good golf and end up in a knuckle duel with some
compulsive
talker.
When nothing helps, it’s best to resort to your sense of humor. The
TT
you draw might be so dumb that it’s better to think of him as a
humorous figure instead of someone who’s ruining your round of golf.
And you can buoy your spirit with the thought that you probably will
never have to play with him again.
One of the oldest arguments that TTs use in their defense is that
football and basketball players have to learn to play while it’s
noisy. Anyone who thinks this is a logical argument shouldn’t be
playing serious golf; it’s a stupid observation made by people that
don’t have a clue as to what golf is all about.
In closing, this is for any clods out there who think it’s okay to
talk while other players are trying to hit a shot: It isn’t okay.
Put
your brain in gear and your mouth in neutral.

Richard’s Thoughts
Initiating The Downswing
The golf swing is actually two swings-the first, a windup that
creates
energy and tension; the second, the downswing. In starting the
downswing, the weight is shifted to the left side, and lift hip
rotates in a counterclockwise motion. The weight shift lowers the
hands when you get to the top of the backswing. During the lowering,
the wrists remain cocked. The longer you can delay uncocking your
wrists, the better. This way, you can generate more clubhead speed
in
the hitting area. The hitting area is located from six to eight
inches behind the ball. During the downswing, the hips should
continue to move counterclockwise and should be well out of the way
until you finish, with your stomach facing the hole. During the
swing, the head position should be exactly as it was at the address.
A cautionary note: Never let your hands move past the bulk of your
weight at any time. Your hands move faster than your body.
Consequently, you must start the downswing by first moving the hips.
This creates the impression of a pause at the top of the backswing.
The most important part of the swing is balance, and you get proper
balance with the correct hip action. If you maintain good balance,
you should have no trouble keeping the ball in play whether you hit
it
solidly or not. As a result of proper weight shift, the hands are
automatically pulled down into correct position, with the right
elbow
close to the body.
Until next week…good golfing!
