Golf Article by Dr. Bert A. Glass, New Mexico
I am in my eighties now, and I no longer have aspirations to become
a scratch golfer. However, in my younger days I had a rather
interesting experience. I was a successful practicing thoracic and
cardiovascular surgeon who managed to play golf one or two days most
weeks. I had a stretch of very low scores for a period of some three
or four weeks and my handicap dropped from 14 to a sterling 8. I
decided that for my annual vacation that year I would go to a widely
advertised golf school, sponsored by a well known golf publication,
being held in the Dominican Republic. The school featured a
prominent golf teacher as the primary attraction, as well as several
other respected, but less famous, golf instructors. I will not
mention his name, but this occurred when I was in my forties and I
am now in my eighties. Some of the instructors are still living, as
is the prominent chief attraction, although he is real! lly not as
prominent as he was at that time. Needless to say, the tuition to
attend this prominent golf school was steep, but I felt it would be
worth it, so my wife and I flew to a very lovely resort in the
Dominican Republic so that I could have the benefit of the famed
instructor. The school was a three day affair. On the first day, the
famous teacher was not present, but the other instructors, some of
whom are still teaching, were present and they were all very helpful
and very encouraging. On the second day of the school the
\"maestro\" appeared on the range where some fifteen or twenty
duffers of varying abilities were laboring to improve their golf
swings. It is notable that the famous teacher is a rather small man,
but was known as a very long hitter of the golf ball. It is also
notable that when he moved from one student to another there was a
marked change in his demeanor. When he instructed a female student
he was very gallant and! Encouraging. No one could have been nicer.
However, when he moved down the line of sweating, swinging, golf
tyros his demeanor changed from one student to the next. When he was
teaching a male student who was shorter than himself (there were
actually a few of these) he spent extra time with that student and
was very encouraging. When he taught a male student of about his own
size he was also very sympathetic and gave excellent advice.
However, when he came to some poor, struggling student who stood a
couple of inches taller than himself sarcasm and criticism poured
forth in an unending stream. Unfortunately for me, I was four or
five inches taller and probably thirty pounds heavier than this
revered golf teacher. I received at least twice the amount of his
time as did any of the smaller students and I received five or six
times the nasty remarks regarding my abilities as did any of the
smaller students. Of course, five or six student! S had been
gathered around when he got to my station. This was the way that he
worked at each station. Before he got through with me I was a
\"basket case\". There was no way I could hit a golf ball out of my
shadow. I subsequently noted that other students who were larger
than this famous teacher received the same, or even worse, treatment
than I had received, depending on how much larger they were
Fortunately we had only one day with this character. The other two
days were with gentlemen like Davis Love ( now expired), Peter
Kostis, and one other noted instructor who still runs successful
golf schools (who shall remain nameless). Had it not been for these
gentlemen I would have packed my bags and returned home after my
experience with this famed little guru who was the most noted
instructor of his day. I have since attended several other golf
schools which I found very helpful and have had the benefit of being
taught by other noted instructors. ! However, I will never forget,
nor forgive, one pint-sized egotistical \"has been\" little man who
had enjoyed a rather limited amount of success on the PGA tour, and
traded on it for years as a teacher and as a manufacturer of golf
clubs. Incidentally, when he got through with me my handicap went up
within a month from 8 to 15.
Thank you Dr. Glass for your experiences. Many of us have known this
to happen several times.

This weeks question for Sensei Mark Anthony:
Mark,
I don\'t know what happened, but my game is just totally
fouled up. I am slicing everything, my distance is down and fun
level is in
the toilet. I can\'t transfer my weight correctly, despite the two
club
swing. I fund my whole lower half spinning before impact, yanking
open the
clubface and goodbye ball. When I am done, my lead toe is pointing
to the
target fully. When I try to correct, I can\'t get the ball airborne.
Any
ideas?
Thanks,
John
John...
Let me start by making a small observation.
I believe that you\'re totally focused on the OUTCOME of your swing
instead of the act of making the best swing possible.
You need to focus on what needs to be done. NOT WHAT YOU FEAR!!!
Regroup and go to the range with a specific goal of only looking to
make good swings with complete confidence (almost to the point of
arrogance) that you\'ll hot your target EVERY time.
Try that and get back to me

Quick Golf Tip
20-50 yards
If your ball comes to rest just off the green and there are no
hazards between it and the hole the wisest shot to play is the chip
and run. The ball is lofted over the fringe of the green and then
runs the rest of the distance to the hole along the ground. It is
safer than the lofted pitch shot from this position because a
slightly mishit chip shot will perform much better than a mishit
pitch.
The set up
Again, set up with control in mind. Use a 5 iron, 6 iron, 7 iron,
depending on which club you feel most comfortable with and how much
fringe grass you have to clear. Adopt a narrow and open stance with
the ball opposite the toe of your back foot so that your hands are
in front of the ball. Grip down almost as far as the shaft.
The main problem we have with the set-up is the failure to get
comfortable. Relax and press your hands forward slightly so they are
ahead of the ball. Don\'t let your arms, wrists and shoulders tense
up by gripping the club too tightly.
The chip and run shot is ideal on the links courses where the turf
is cropped short and the ground hard which makes the chip and run a
far better option than the lofted pitch.

How A Martial Arts Expert Stumbled Onto The Simple Secret

Good Website For You To Check Out
On a hot summer afternoon, last week, two golfers took the course.
They were very much alike. Both played four times a week. Both had
the same handicap and the same equipment. And both took lessons from
the same golf professional once a week.
But there was a difference. One played as if the weight of the world
was on his shoulders. And the other; as if there was no competition
between the two.
What Was the Difference?
The difference is proper training - proper \"Core training\" to be
specific. The above athlete, the one that played as if there was no
competition; played relaxed, confident, and has the habit of quickly
visualizing a successful outcome before each swing.
Because she trained her core three times a week, she was in peak
condition for golf. You see, athletes have a \"core\" that the body
revolves around. And unless you strengthen your core, you are doomed
before you start.
So, here is the core of a golf athlete. Take note, and train your
core at least twice a week!
THE GOLF ATHLETES CORE
Core training involves working the \"core\" of the athlete, also
referred to as an athlete\'s \"base.\" Athletes should be
multi-functional. They should be able to perform tasks using upper
and lower extremities at the same time. For this reason, having a
strong structural core enables athletes to perform better.
1. Abdominal muscles
2. Lower back
3. Overall flexibility
4. Balance & Stability
5. Mental strength
Abdominal muscles & Lower back
Important for posture, strengthens ties between upper and lower
body. Focus on crunches and sit-ups (all types) for abdominal
strength, and hyperextensions and \"good mornings\" for lower back.
Flexibility
Key to being limber and loose. Increases blood flow, circulation,
and enables muscles to speed up and react quicker.
Balance & Stability
By putting the body in awkward positions, balance teaches the neuro-muscular
system to compensate and react during competition. Various drills
can be constructed, such as balance beams, movement on one foot and
many others. The possibilities are limitless.
Mental strength
Mental strength training is critical for anything you do in life,
not just performance in sports. Confidence in yourself, your skills,
and your ability to relax under pressure will determine your
success.
Core training should be an athlete\'s focus, as it ties rotation,
speed, power/strength training and mental performance together.
Emphasize your core.
