Question and Answers by Joe DeLorenzo
i have some confusion about how far to take back the club
i can get away with 3/4 swings for my high irons, but when i need to
get
150+ yards i really need to get the club up over my shoulders
my question is when i take the club back for a full
swing.......should i be concentrating on getting the club pointing
towards the target at the top
the reason i ask is that sometimes i just feel that it is a strain
to get it that far back
and when i focus my attention on that i mess up the other
fundamentals........
so, can i take the club back up over my shoulders but not have to
have club facing target in order to produce a succesful shot
thanks
bruce
Reply to Bruce:
Hello Bruce,
Before I answer your question about how far back to
take the club, picture the face of a clock behind the
golfer. At the top of the backswing, 12 o\'clock would
have the shaft pointing straight up, 3 o\'clock would
be the shaft pointing toward the target parallel to
the ground. If you can agree to this picture, then
watch the Seniors tour, guys like Dana Quigley, Allen
Doyle, and Moe Norman who founded the \"Natural Golf\"
swing. None of them go beyond 12 o\'clock or 1
o\'clock, and all of them have been very successful.
Therefore if you can hit your short irons well with a
shorter swing, you should also hit your other clubs j
ust as well with a shorter swing. There is no rule or
law that says you have to take it back any further.
If you are making clean contact every time with a
shorter swing, then you will never get worse than a
bogey on any hole, so you should be shooting around
89!!! If you take the club back any further, you are
risking a messed up shot. Never ever strain to take
the club back too far. At this point I have to ask
you what your goals are. What is your handicap now,
and what would you (realistically) like it to be? Let
me know.
Joe DeLorenzo
Why do I hit the ground behind the ball with
my driver, standing too close or too far away, what ?
JB.
Hello JB,
If you are hitting the ground with the driver, I have
to assume you are not doing the same with other clubs.
If this is correct, lets assume there is no problem
with your other clubs. Therefore I have to assume
your driver does not fit you, so just tee off with
your 3-wood while you are searching for a better
driver. If you also have the same trouble with your
other clubs, your ball position may be incorrect.
Take a practice swing without a ball, and see where
your divot starts. Then just place the ball just back
of the spot where your divot starts, and you should be
OK. Where is your ball position? Sensei Mark Anthony
tells you in the Body Golf tapes where it should be.
Joe DeLorenzo
I have a mad hook! (I\'m right handed) and this happened last year I
had a pretty bad slice...then I started to hit them straight...and
then bam I\'m hit with a damn hook. And I\'ve been worm-burning my
drives too. This exact thing happened last year. I figure its just
too much golf. I mean last year I was hitting the ball so bad I
almost gave up on golf completely. But then at the beginning of the
year I was averaging 250 on my drives...I dont get it can you help
me? thanks
Semper Fi,
Chris
Hello Semper Fi,
I suspect your clubs have shafts with too much flex.
I would suggest borrowing a set of clubs that have
stiff shafts. I had the same problem years ago when I
rented a set of clubs with \"regular\" shafts, and when
I swung too easy, the ball would hook, and when I
swung too hard, the ball would slice. After I got a
set with stiff shafts, the flex variable was reduced,
and my game improved tremendously. I still hit some
shots off line, but not as bad. Of course there are
other variables such as lie angle, swingweight, shaft
length, etc., but a stiffer shaft should at least
promote consistency, either to the right or to the
left, and then we can take it from there. Let me know
what happens next.

Comments from subscribers:
This is in reply to \"Slow Play is inexcusable\" by Mac Stevenson.
While there is much validity to the points he mentions for slow play
I believe the biggest offenders are the courses themselves. Most of
the course I play try and send off groups every 6 minutes. You are
doomed from the start, slow play is inevitable. But our member
course in Northern California sends off groups at both of their
courses in ten minute intervals. Which makes for a much more
enjoyable round.

Dear Richard
Always enjoy reading your newsletter and the associated
correspondence from fellow golfers. Disagree however with your views
on ranking of the majors. The Open (not the British open) is the
oldest and probably the most prestigious of all the majors and the
one that most golfers including non Americans want to win. No point
in arguing that as folks are entitled to their opinions.
There is a Welsh open, a Scottish Open (played last week) and an
Irish Open. There is NOT an English Open or a British Open it is
simply \"The Open\" as befits the first tournament of its kind. Many
great American golfers have won The Open and all of them refer to it
correctly in their victory speech most notably Tiger in 2000.
They have a great website which provides all the information
throughout the tournament which starts to morrow, as an Englishman
living in Australia this means very little sleep for me over the
four days.
Regards
Mike Sanders
Question for Richard:
Hi Richard,
I was a \"conventional golfer\", for now a Natural Golfer and maybe
soon to be a Body Golfer. Natural Golf seemed to work for awhile but
now my games seems to be regressing. Will your system help/ How will
it help? I will shoot low 90\'s one round and 100 the next. I am
looking for some consistency and ease to this very frustrating game.
Can you help?
Thanks,
Greg
Thanks for the email Greg.
The only way the Body Golf System will help you is when you buy it,
you use it. Too many people buy golf training products and put them
on the shelf and do not use them. Sure they may watch them once, (
while dozing off in the easy chair), but that is it...and they
expect the videos to help them!! You have to use the videos.
The Body Golf System is a proven system. Those testimonials we have
on the website are real...not made up!! The Body Golf System will
help anyone of average intelligence, if...they will use and study
the system.
Here is what you need to do. Watch the videos 2-3 times. This will
implant the major essentials into your mind. Then, with the book as
a guide, go to the range or course and do what Mark says do. Exactly
as he says do it!! Then, go home and watch them a couple of more
times. Then go to the course and practice what the videos teach you.
Repeat as many times as necessary. The more your work at it, the
lower your score will become. It is not a overnite thing. It takes
work on your part. But, the system is proven...the system works!!
The more that you watch them and do what they teach you, the lower
your score will get. But...the secret to the Body Golf Series is
practicing and doing what they say do!! You cannot put them up on
the shelf and expect them to help you. You have to use them.
Sorry for repeating myself so many times, but that is what is
necessary to get your score down where it should be. Take the Body
Golf techniques and put them to use. It is a proven system...not
something new.

Changes That Would Benefit Golf
by
Mac Stevenson
How many times have you hit your tee ball right down the middle and
found--to your utter dismay--that you ball had come to rest in an
old divot, leaving you with no shot.
Admittedly, this doesn\'t happen often, but you shouldn\'t have to
play your ball as it lies when you end up in a fairway divot. Just
because this rule is as old as the hills doesn\'t make it right.
Occasionally you\'re going to end up in a huge gash of a divot that
really leaves you with nothing more than the option to chip it out.
That\'s not fair when you\'ve hit a good drive down the middle. And
the rebuttal that life isn\'t fair doesn\'t stand up.
Like so many things, the issue isn\'t as clear-cut as it might seem.
The question that begs to be answered is: Who is going to decide
whether or not the ball is in an old divot or just a low place in
the fairway. In amateur golf, the player\'s opponents should be the
ones to make the judgment. If the guys you\'re playing with agree
that the ball is in an old divot mark, you should get a free drop of
one club length no closer to the hole.
Now, if you encounter this situation in the rough, that\'s just too
bad. Anything goes if you hit it off the fairway and you\'re not
entitled to any kind of relief.
Golf course superintendents could do their part by marking the spots
where some inconsiderate cluck has left a huge divot in the fairway.
Deep divots take a long time to heal and the replacement sod often
gets caught in the mowers and torn out, leaving a handicap right in
the middle of the fairway. If those unrepaired divots were marked,
there would be no question that a free drop should be allowed.
The officials who are in charge of the rules of golf are by nature a
bit on the stodgy side to begin with, and when they become
completely inflexible and show a lack of common sense, it\'s time
for a change. Just because a rule has been on the books for over a
century is no justification to keep it as is. Golfers shouldn\'t
have to hit out of unrepaired fairway divots.
USGA Handicap System is Flawed
The present USGA Handicap System is based on what the people in
charge refer to as your potential. It\'s too complicated and it
doesn\'t reflect what your true handicap should be.
Under the present system, your worst scores are thrown out and only
your good scores are recorded. That\'s just stupid. Every stroke and
every round should be posted and averaged over a period of time. The
stipulation that you can\'t record more than a double bogey on a
hole is just ridiculous. If you have a horrible hole, it should
count.
If you have a handicap of 10 on a par 70 golf course, that should
mean that your average score over a period of time is 80. The USGA
has made it so complicated that trying to read their manual is like
trying to read the fine print in an insurance policy. It would be to
everyone\'s benefit if the present system were junked and replaced
by a simplified and fairer system.
There\'s nothing so permanent as change, and golfing regulations
should be under constant scrutiny.

Richard\'s thoughts:
Taking Charge of Your Life
Here are a few things that all of us need to note to keep our life
in some kind of order.
1. Take charge of your time. Time is a great equalizer. No matter
how smart, how old, how young, how ugly, how pretty, how poor, how
rich, what kind of golfer we are, every one of us have 24 hours in a
day to use to your advantage. You can choose the time you get up,
how far you drive to work, etc. Choose how you spend your
time…mornings, afternoons, evenings.
2. Practice maintenance in your life. Regularly check for any
problems that may need attention and take action before it becomes a
problem.
3. Instead of worrying…start doing. Make better decisions that you
are capable of making. Don\'t worry for days about a job that will
only take a few hours…do it now. Get it out of the way. Choose to
take action, or delegate the action to someone else.
4. Set goals for yourself each day. Have a written plan. You have 24
hours, schedule it. Protect it. Commit to some particular goals for
each day and say no to all other distractions.
5. Organize your day. Do not get distracted. If you want to play
golf, make plans and stay focused.
6. Finish what you started-that pile that needs tossing, your income
tax, practicing your golf swing. Pick one, finish it and move onto
the next one.
Hope these tips will help you get started on a better road in life.
Until next week…good golfing!
