This week we have an article written by Calvin Mallard on putting.
The Long Putt
One of the hardest plays to make in golf is the long putt. Most
golfers have very little idea how to hit it, either slam the ball
way past the hole or hit the putt so poorly it hardly gets halfway
there. It is a difficult shot, but there are several things that can
be done to help eliminate three putt greens.
Walk up the line of the putt to examine the grass and get a better
idea of the distance from the ball to the hole. Most greens have
some degree of inconsistency, and the grass near the hole can be
thinner and faster than the grass along the early line of the putt.
It is a good idea to stand straight up when addressing the long putt
than the short putt. Doing this raises the level of the eyes and
makes it a little easier to judge the distance up to the moment the
ball is struck. You need to hit this shot solid with great accuracy.
A solid shot will at least give the ball a chance to reach the area
of the cup. Always visualize an imaginary circle around the hole
about six feet in diameter. Try to let the ball die just at the
front edge of this circle. This will give you a margin of error of
six feet, three feet short or three feet long.
Practice. It works.
Would you like to learn how I took over 40 strokes off my game and
added 100
yards to my drives in one season? How would you like to step up to a
tee and
know that you are going to hit your target? It doesn\'t matter how
long
you\'ve been a slicer, Tao of Golf will cure your slice for good in
a few
minutes. www.thinkandreachpar.com/tarp/tao.htm
This week Sensei Mark Anthony answers another question from a
subscriber for us. If you have a question about your game, send it
to me and I will try to get Sensei Mark to answer it for me. And I
would like to thank Sensei Mark for taking his time to answer these
questions for us.
Greetings!
Sensei Anthony - I have been golfing for 2 years and usually shoot
around
105. I recently started the Tao Of Golf program and it has made a
HUGE
difference in my iron shots, but I am still struggling to make
decent shots
with my driver and fairway woods. Can you offer me any helpful hints
to
work on to improve these clubs?
Thanks!!! (Respectful bow to the Sensei)
George
George,
You\'re having trouble with your longer clubs? Most people do,
including yours truly sometimes.
However, here\'s an idea that might help you.
You might be swinging too hard. Remember, the loft and length of the
longer clubs is what makes the ball go further, not you swinging out
of your shoes. Centrifugal force is what helps you hit the ball a
longer distance simply because the clubhead is further away from
you.
Most people think that they have to be like Tiger and swing from the
heels all of the time. The thing that these folks don\'t realize is
that Tiger has been playing golf under CONSTANT supervision for his
entire life. (well, about 23 years worth)
You, me, anyone, ain\'t Tiger so stop trying to be...It took me a
long time to learn that lesson but once I did, my rounds of golf
were more fun, relaxing and I stopped putting so much pressure on
myself to excel at a game that I can only practice and play a few
months of the year WITHOUT professional, constant coaching and
marathon practice sessions.
Try this...
With longer clubs, use the \"Three-quarter power swings\" from the
Tao of Golf video. That should get you back on track to your regular
swing. The 3/4 swings help you because they remove the tension from
your swing which will perfect your alignment, increase clubhead
speed and reduce your risk of hitting bad, out-of-control shots.
Also, do lots of \"no peeks swings\" at the range. Doing No peeks
swings will get you from a results-oriented mindset to a
make-the-best-swing-possible mindset.
FORGET about the ball and how its flying! Make a good swing and the
rest will take care of itself...
Hope that helps!!!
