This week we have an article from Jennifer Scott, Certified Clinical
Hypnotherapist. This week she gives us some good advice on our
swing. If you have any questions for Jennifer, please send them to
me. This is a question for Jennifer from a subscriber last week,
that Jennifer answered.
I would like to know if Jennifer could cure by hypnosis my very bad
habit of picking up in my golf swing just before the club strikes
the ball. I know how to swing properly and do so part of the time
however most of the time I do not. Also part of the time my weight
is still on the back foot after the swing is complete. Thank you

Dear Ralph
I\'m not qualified to correct your swing mechanics because I\'m not
a golf
pro. So I suggest that you see a teaching professional to correct
the
physical part of your golf problem -- the mechanics of your swing.
However, you also need to address the other side of your problem --
the
Mental Side. Is your problem caused by Stress? You say you \"know
how to
swing properly and do so part of the time.\" Is that \"part\" when
you\'re
under pressure?
If this is the case, hypnosis can definitely remove the pre-swing
stress
and anxiety component that is causing your problem. With my golf
clients,
I do it by replacing confusing, tension-causing pre-swing thoughts
with a
calming combination of words and images. The most important, most
powerful pre-swing image you can possibly have is the Image of The
Target.
When you look at the target, burn that image into your brain. Now
see it
as you look down at the ball. Superimpose it on the ball\'s logo. If
you
lose it, look at the target again. This is why golf pros keep
looking at
the target and then down at the ball. They\'re fixing it in their
mind --
their subconscious mind.
This Target Image has two positive effects: 1) It replaces
destructive
swing thoughts, like \"lift the ball,\" and 2) It lets your body do
the
perfect swing it knows how to do.

SWING STUPID.

At the pairs competition of the 2002 Winter Olympics, commentator
Scott
Hamilton told of a good piece of advice given to ice skaters:
\"Skate
Stupid.\" Which means don\'t think about what you have to do to
execute
triple Axel. You don\'t have time. Just do it.
But wait. Golfers are told to have \"key\" swing thoughts. Like
\"Turn your
shoulders but restrict your hips.\" Or \"Start the downswing with
your feet
[knees] [arms],\" etc., etc. What could be wrong with \"key\" swing
thoughts?
This: in 1.6 seconds, the average golfer can\'t think about
something and
then execute it. Top professionals can, sometimes. But you? Forget
about
it. Don\'t think. Swing Stupid.
So how does a golfer not think while swinging? You just replace
thinking
with something else. Fuzzy Zoeller whistles. Others chew gum.
Through
self-hypnosis, my golf Clients burn in the image of the target, then
retain that image as they address the ball. They \"see\" the ball
going to
the target while they\'re looking at the ball they\'re about to hit.
So the
connection with the target is never lost. The swing happens
naturally. The
ball goes to the target.
That doesn\'t sound so stupid, does it?
