Quote of the week:

The secret of making something work in your lives is, first of all, the deep desire to make it work: then the faith and belief that it can work: then to hold that clear definite vision in your consciousness and see it working out step by step, without one thought of doubt or disbelief.

Golf Quote of the week:

A ball will always come to rest halfway down a hill, unless there is sand or water at the bottom.

Comment from subscriber

I beg to differ from Mr. Salomon Ojalvo when he says that your newsletter is boring and repetitive. No doubt the same products is pushed over and over again but it\'s a good product and if it’s beneficial to everyone why not? There are new subscribers and by doing so more people will benefit for the good of the golf game. In this world one should not be selfish and only think for himself. Besides apart from the reminder of the good product, I must say that I have learned a lot from the other tips and snippets that\'s being given in the newsletter.
Keep it coming Richard

Another example for basketball would be a defender
who braces for impact of an aggressive drive to the
basket, and the defender gets called for the foul
because she/he was not standing perfectly still.

It\'s apparent you are not a basketball official. There is no requirement of \"perfectly still.\"

Question for Sensei Mark Anthony:

As someone who has practiced and competed in Tai Chi for 9 years, why do I have such a difficult time controlling the pace and effortlessness of my golf swing. Once I get to the back of my golf swing and start the downswing, I loose all touch with what I am doing and flail at the ball like a mad man. Any suggestions on how to get control of myself and my downswing? Larry

Hey Larry!
Thanks for the note. What you’ve written is THE single biggest problem golf instructors face in the world today and probably always. It’s also something that can’t be answered with a sentence, so paste it to a Word document and print it out to read it. (I can get a little long-winded sometimes)
So…you’re having trouble with your swing huh? OK, here’s what we can work on. Believe it or not, most folks have no idea that it takes a relaxed mind to have a relaxed body. Sounds obvious but it’s not. ESPECIALLY with golf.

In order to have that long, syrupy, flowing swing like your golf heroes, there must be a few things present.

First: you have to have close-to-flawless mechanics.
Second: you need to have total confidence it them.

Now, by buying Tao of Golf ( or the Body Golf Full Swing), you’ve gotten on the road to number one, which in turn (hopefully) gets you to number two at some point down the road. The drills, exercises, principles and the structure of the instruction are laid out that way so you really don’t have to think about it.

The main issue here my friend is NOT your swing. It’s your ATTITUDE and STATE OF MIND when you step up to the ball. I’ll answer your question with a question. Remember, answer to yourself honestly because I’m not sitting there with you. What are you thinking of when you setup to a shot: HIT or SWING?

I’m willing to bet that it’s HIT. Most people really can’t help it. It’s been ingrained into their consciousness from day one, so it’s really a matter of re-training your thought process more than anything.

It is easy? Nope. Any time you want to break a habit, it’s difficult because you get VERY comfortable in what you are already doing. And nobody likes to be uncomfortable, right?

OK…here’s how you can begin to train to SWING and not HIT…and, if you remember, in my genius, I included this in Tao of Golf.

Firstly, you’re so preoccupied with the RESULT of your swing that you’re forgetting how to achieve the particular “result” that your mind is all bound up about! Can you see where this will tense-and-tie you up? You build this picture in your mind about how the ball MIGHT go into the woods, fairway bunker or pond, and you get frightened as hell WORRYING about all of those scary monsters on the golf course.

You’ve forgotten why you’re there. YOU”RE PLAYING!!!! Not working. You’re there to have a good time and get away from the grind, so firstly, unless you plan to compete in The Masters next spring, stop sweating it.

Alright, I think I’ve finally gotten to where I’d planned to take you with this. Go to the section of the video where it teaches “No Peeks Swings.”

For all of you reading…here’s a freebee.
1. Begin on the range with your bucket of balls.
2. After warming up with a few thousand double-club swings, (relax, just kidding) grab your wedge or 9-iron and put a few balls down.
3. Setup in a nice square setup and swing the club with the ball in the way.
4. Here’s the secret of this swing. DO NOT WATCH THE BALL FLY!!! Keep your eyes on where the ball was sitting. Hence the “No Peeks” monster attached to the exercise.
5. Do this for the first dozen or so balls that you hit.

Remember, this is the attitude that you need to have whenever you swing on the golf course. If you watch all of your heroes on TV and in the magazines, you’ll see that at impact, every one of their faces is GLUED to where the ball is sitting at impact and, (here’s the kicker) a little beyond! Start training yourself to count a beat before lifting your head up to watch the ball fly.

SO…let me catch my breath because that WAS long-winded wasn’t it? Let’s have a little review.
Study the “No-Peeks Swings” in the video. Practice them mucho, mucho. The No-Peeks Swings will translate to your game if you’ve done them enough at the rage. They will increase your confidence, which will make you smoother by default.

Think of this real quick. Turn a two-by-four board flat on the floor and then walk on it. No problem, right? You could walk all day on it and never loose your balance. Now, imagine that you’re 20 stories up with no safety net and you have to walk 20 feet across a span. I guarantee that you’ll “forget” how to do a simple thing as walk in a jiffy!

You’d be so frightened, that you won’t be able to put on foot in front of the other anymore. It’s the same thing on the golf course, my man. Fear, anxiety, tension – all killers of good smooth swings. Confidence on the other hand is what will set you free!

Oh…let me clue you in on another little gem of info. Practice these swings in your MIND whenever you have a chance. Just visualize perfect, smooth, effortless swings along with the ball flying straight and true time-and-again. It’s a scientifically proven fact (don’t ask me to quote the research, my karate sensei taught it to me when I was a squeaky-voiced teenager) that by doing this, you’ll reprogram your subconscious a lot faster than you would on the range and physical realm only.

I hope that this little lesson helps. Drop a note when you have a chance

See you next time!
Sensei Mark Anthony

Article by Joe DeLorenzo

The most interesting swing aid I have ever seen is the
“Freddy-Connect”, for several reasons.
It clearly shows you your swing path at impact.
It clearly shows you whether the face of your club is
open, closed, or square at impact.
It clearly shows if your impact would have been off
the toe or heel or square.
It keeps you from looking up because you want to see
the lights, encouraging you to focus on the impact
spot (i.e. keep your head down, or face the ball at
impact, whatever your pet phrase is).
How does it work? The device attaches to your shaft
at the hosel where it joins the club head. You line up
the two Leeds along the swing path. When you swing,
the centrifugal force activates the Leeds. One is red
and the other is green. These lights show traces as
you swing the club thru the impact zone. So if your
clubface is not square at impact, you will see a
separation in the two traces. Depending on which
color is above or below the other, your clubface is
either open or closed. The traces also show your
swing path, is it outside/in, inside/out, or square?
Do the traces appear where you expected? If not, you
may be striking the ball off the heel or toe of the
club.

It’s Winter--Tee it up Everywhere
by
Mac Stevenson
Most of us are fortunate to get out once or twice a week during the long, dreary days of winter. When you do get a chance to play, why make the game harder than it has to be by playing the ball down. Improve your lies everywhere.
For one thing, the dormant course isn’t in the same kind of shape that it will be when the grass comes to life and the mowing crews go to work. And your game will be rusty to say the least; give yourself a break and tee it up everywhere, including taking a level lie in the traps.
A lot of players think playing winter rules will have an adverse effect on their game when they start playing the ball down in the spring. It won’t. You might even be surprised to discover that you play better when you don’t improve your lie because you will concentrate when you catch a tight lie.
In the winter, teeing the ball up will help in several ways. For long shots from the fairway or rough, you can hit your three woods where you might have to use a four or five wood with a poor lie.
Improving your lie helps more on short shots around the green than anywhere else. Most of us lose our touch on short pitches and chips during a long layoff, and giving yourself a good lie will not be a cure-all. But it sure helps.
Depending on your course, the traps may not be well maintained during the winter; consequently, you should agree with your playing partners to take level lies in the traps. Otherwise, you’re liable to be trying to hit out of a footprint or some other unfair handicap in the trap.
When the warm weather comes and your course is in good shape, you should play the ball down. And that won’t cause your scores to go up like you might think.
During warmer weather, your overall improvement in timing and rhythm on full shots, short pitches, and chips will offset the difference from teeing it up and playing the ball down. You’ll be amazed to discover that your score doesn’t go up as much as you might think it would when you quit using winter rules.
With a poor lie on short shots, golfers have to concentrate on keeping their head steady and hitting through the shot. Often, the result is better than chipping or pitching from a perfect lie.
On fairway woods, you’ll have to use your best judgment on whether or not to try and hit a three wood from a tight lie. In most cases, players are better off using the more forgiving four or five wood.
For now, when playing infrequently if you’re lucky, tee it up everywhere and have a more enjoyable game. You’ll play better and that has the added benefit of increasing your enthusiasm and anticipation for the coming spring. It won’t be long before the course will be maintained and the weather will be warm and you’ll start playing the ball down. And that lasts for a long time.

Richard’s Thoughts
Right before Christmas, I think it was, I had a email conservation with one of the subscribers, named Bob Thomas. In the conservation Bob told me that he had written two books on golf, and one of them was “Ben Hogan’s Secret.” Bob went on to say that it is the only book written on Hogan that Hogan\'s family approved of and thought was factual. Bob told me where I could order the book and I did. It arrived very promptly in a few days, and I added it to the stack of other unread books that I seem to keep around.
After my eighteen holes this past Saturday afternoon while I was relaxing in my easy chair, I picked up this book and started reading it. I could not put it down until I finished reading it late Saturday night. It is a great little book. I think that anyone that loves golf will love this book.
Bob Thomas was a young man in 1953 when Ben Hogan had his banner year. This was the year that Hogan won three modern golf tournaments. But let me tell you, from reading this book, you will discover that Bob Thomas knew Ben Hogan, and indeed what legend Hogan is.
If you want to read a book about his life and the real Ben Hogan, I highly recommend this book. Bob Thomas doesn’t even know that I have this book, so there is no personal gain for me. You can order it from www.hoganbook.com and I highly recommend it.

Until next week, good golfing.
