One of our subscribers, Chris emailed me a question for Sensei Mark
Anthony, and Mark was gracious enough to answer it for us.
Chris you wrote:
As I start the swing forward I look up causing my left shoulder to
swing up and to the left. This leaves me with my weight on my right
foot(back) causing very few sweet spot hits, poor shots, with no
distance. I tell myself on the back to stay down and swing through
but I lose my concentration and very seldom do it. I have been
playing golf for about thirty years and this recently developed.
About 2 years ago I developed the shanks. I finally got rid of the
shanks but developed the above fault and also lost a great deal of
distance. Two years ago I could easily hit a pitching wedge 120 to
130 yards. Now I am lucky if I hit it a hundred. Is their a drill to
cure this problem and also give me a little of my distance back.
Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks Chris M. Ozark, Al

Chris,
What you\'re doing is what I call PEEKING. It\'s simply because
you\'re so intent on ball flight that you look up before you make
contact. HEAR THIS...Preoccupation with ball flight is the root of
all swing flaws!
There\'s a drill in my video Tao of Golf called THE NO-PEEKS DRILL.
Try this. At the range, after a few warm up swings with a wedge,
setup and hit some WITHOUT watching the ball fly. Hit 10 or 20 and
have a friend give you feedback only after you finish your allotted
balls.
The other thing that you\'re doing is an EASY fix. You have a lazy
right side. There\'s a drill in the video called WALK-THRU SWINGS.
All that is, is when you finish your swing, you take a single step
through toward the target. It\'s kind of hard to visualize
sometimes, but if you\'ve seen me do it on the video you\'ll know
what I mean.
One thing about that drill is that it cured my terrible chronic
banana slice in a matter of a minute. Literally a MINUTE. If you
don\'t know my history, I summarize.
I took up golf in 1989 and was hooked! However, I had such a slice,
that my driver would only go about 150 yards. This was a wicked
banana, let me tell you! I would consistently shoot on the high side
of 120 for 18 holes.
Well, in the early spring of 1992, I was given a 10 minute lesson by
a driving range owner. In less than ten minutes, my slice EVAPORATED
and I was hitting a driver 250 yards straight as a die!!!! That
season, (September) I broke 80 for the first time. The next season,
I had a USGA handicap of 8!
That\'s an abbreviated version of \"my story\" By doing the
walkthrough swings, I beat that damn slice. You\'ll see Gary Player
do it all the time on TV if you watch the Senior PGA Tour...
Hope that helps.
God Bless
Mark
