Richard’s Quick Tip:

Commitment Builder

Works on making sure you totally commit yourself through the
ball. A major fault of many amateur golfers is their inclination
to come off the shot. This simply means not committing yourself
all the way through the impact zone. Contact, after this fault
has occurred is rarely solid. This basic drill is an effective
way of improving your impact position and encouraging you to
extend through the ball.

The way to correct this is just place a tee about 6 inches in
front of your ball (using a driver) and imagine you are trying to
hit another ball off that tee.

purchased the power golf dvd (my first dvd from you). i find
the information good. the power grip helped my wife and i
instantly!. i must criticize the dvd for very poor video. i can
see the trainer really well, but when he makes his shots the
video is too low to view the path of his shots. he says in his
video: "watch and i will slice this", or "i will do something
else.. watch my ball flight". all i can see is him swinging his
club and the pile of golf balls beside him. i can see the green,
but would like to see his ball flight. i give the dvd a very poor
rating for video picture. i want to buy his golf swing video, but
not if its the same poor quality as this one. let me know if this
is what you see... i would never let this dvd out if this was my
instructional video. larry kluckman

Nice to hear from you Larry. Thank you for the comments and I am
very pleased to hear that our dvd helped you and your wife. Let
me try to answer your question the best I can. With the dvd you
received from me there was a bright pink letter with it and in
that letter it says “our videos are not Hollywood productions,
but they are full of good quality content” and that is exactly
what they are. We are not one of those big companies that
produce golf training videos that look pretty and has all the
bells a whistles. But we are one of the “very few” companies
that produce golf training videos that not only has content in
them, but has content that you can understand and use. We are
unlike the other companies in that our videos are very low
budget. Why? Because we don’t have the budget to spend on
making them Hollywood Productions. But, I repeat, they are full
of good golf content. And I get emails from people everyday
telling me how much these videos have helped them improve their
golf scores.

To be completely honest with you, none of the Body Golf videos
are Hollywood Productions, but I will promise you, they are full
of good golf content and will help you lower your golf score…if
you practice what the videos teach you. We may not have the
looks of AJ, but several have told me our teaching methods and
content are 10 times better than his.

Thank you and I hope I answered your question.

Dr. Richard C Myers

Dear Richard,
I look forward each week to the great Newsletter's and
I forward them to my buddies.
I recently purchased the Toa of Golf video and found a
whole different way of the swing movement. Thanks to
Mark!
So I'm currently working on this new tool.
I've had been playing Golf off/on for several years
and now at 44yrs of young age,I've have the time and
attitude to really work on my game.Currently I'm
shooting in the mid 90's and which this is down from
the avg. of around 135. It went down this time for the
reason's above.
I purchased the video of Mark's as a first step to
start tweaking my game as I have done as much as I can
do on my own to the mid 90's.
I will work hard on these new steps that Mark has
shown me and really, they are straight forward and
easy to understand.

My question is, Mark's tape is my first step, what do
you suggest for me to view and apply next in my new
quest??
Good Golfing to you.
B.A. in Texas

Answer from Sensei Mark

B.A.
First of all, thanks for the input. I really appreciate it.
Its nice to know when something works out like you planned.

As far as what's next, I'd suggest the Body Golf Short Game DVD,
Body Golf How to Practice DVD, and the Body Golf Shot Saver DVD.

Those should get you started...
Next year (depending on how much you practice and progress) I'd
suggest the Body Golf Power Steps DVD.

Take care and stay in touch.
Mark

Richard

Just wanted to update you on my progress. I have had the Body
golf collection just over a year now. When I started my handicap
was 118. Now my handicap is 78. You said it would take 40
strokes off my game, and it has. I contribute all of this to
your videos. Mark is a good teacher and knows how to get the
point across. Just like you said, I watched the videos several
times and they practiced what he taught me. I think you should
give me the new video, since I have bought all the others!! haha
Thank you Bruce Walker, Rutherford, NC

R.M. Thanks for the email Bruce. It is nice to know that you
have accomplished so much in the past year or so. Anyone I talk
to I tell them they have to watch the videos more than once and
do exactly as Mark says, to take that much off their score.
These videos do work, but you have to do your part too.
Tell you what…not because you have purchased all of my other
videos, but because you have used my videos and reduced your
score 40 strokes…I will give you the Power Steps video. Anyone
that lowers their handicap by 40 strokes deserves and have earned
a free video.

Thank you for sharing with us and I will get you video in the
mail. Now with this video, you should reach par!!!
Take care.

Richard.

R.M. Sorry but I forgot to include the answer to the trivia
question last week. The answer is Karrie Webb.

A Bit of Golf Trivia:
Can you guess within ten, how many pro tournaments did it take
the following golfers to get their third win? Woods, Mickelson, Nicklaus,
Palmer, Norman,
Watson?

Joe,
i have a dispute with a playing partner which i hope you can help
settle. last weekend, my friend hit his fist shot and it looked like it
was going OB. so he declares his intention to played a provisional ball. he
then duffs the provisional shot and it lands about 80m behind where his
first shot should have landed. we were playing sixes and his cart-mate tells
him that Rule 27-2b (WHEN PROVISIONAL BALL BECOMES BALL IN PLAY - The
player may play a provisional ball until he reaches the place where the original
ball is likely to be. If he makes a stroke with the provisional ball from
the place where the original ball is likely to be or from a point nearer
the hole than that place, the original ball is lost and the provisional ball
becomes the ball in play under penalty of stroke and distance Rule27-1)says
he can hit his 2nd shot on the provisional ball before attempting to look
for his first ball as the first line of Rule 27-2b says the player may play a
p-ball until he reaches the place where the original ball is likely to be. i
disputed that call and said that while he can play a provisional ball, he
must not hit the 2nd shot on the provisional ball until he attempts to
looks for his first ball. you see, my friend not only proceeded to hit his 2nd
shot on the provisional (which went past where his first ball likely landed),
but he found his first ball in-bounds, and went on to declare that his
first ball was alive and then played his first ball and picked up his
second. i told him in match play, it is a loss of hole. he played the 2nd shot
of his provisional ball (which meant that the p-ball is the ball in
play) and subsequently played his first ball after finding it in-bounds,
that's playing the wrong ball (rule 15-5). and then he subsequently
picked up the p-ball. who's right? his cart mate says the rules are set up to
speed up play and therefore you can play a p-ball until you reach the
original ball. i said the rules do not need to be logical and he cannot play the
p-ball a second time before looking for his first. one example i gave was
this. What happens if i hit my drive 270m to what i think looks OB, then
declare and take a provisional only to duff it 50m. then i take a 2nd shot at
the p-ball and slice it OB. so i play my 6th shot from the 50m mark and top
it for 100m. i then take my 7th shot and it goes past the original ball
and I find my original ball. do i play my 2nd shot on the original because
my friend says 27-2b states i must play until i reach it the original, or I
play my 8th stroke? or what happens if it is a par 3 and the 1st shot
looks like it is OB, and i hole my provisional. do i take par even as i find
that my 1st shot is not OB? do i play my 2nd shot or take par?
appreciate your help with this. thanks.
dc

Hello DC,
Your partner is correct, you can play several shots with the
provisional ball until you reach the area where your first ball was likely to
be. The p-ball is not in play until you play a shot standing past that
area. The rule does not say you can only hit one shot with the p-ball. If
you do play a shot after you pass that area, the provisional ball then
becomes the ball in play, even if you happen to find the original ball. On your
second example, where you hit your 7th shot past that area, your
original ball is still in play if you find it, so all those p-shots did not matter
anymore, as long as you played them before you were able to reach the
original ball. On your par 3 example, if you find your original ball, your
provisional does not count, even if you ace it. You must continue to play the hole
with your original ball.
Joe

Joe,
Can u help me w/ my drives?? I slice them, and it doesn't feel
like i hit in the sweet spot.
King Cobra

Hi King,
With a name like that, I must assume you are using that brand of
club. Since you did not mention slicing with any other clubs, I would simply
try another driver with a larger sweet spot and also is heel-weighted to
promote a hook, like the Cleveland Launcher, John Daly LoCo Crazy Long, or Ping
TiSi.
However, if you do slice also with all your other clubs, then you
would do well to get the Slice Buster Body Golf video.
Joe

Joe,
Can you give me some advice please? A bit of background ......I
was a never higher than six handicap when I stopped playing golf about 15
years ago. When I started playing again about a year ago and due to knew
technology, I obviously found huge changes in the game - I resisted at first
but then succumbed and retired my wonderful old McGregor Tourney woods and
bought a Jack Nicklaus Air one wood - 10.5 degree, 430 cc. I love the
club, hit it beautifully and seldom miss a fairway. But the problem is that
the ball just goes so high. On soft fairways the ball frequently comes back -
much like a well hit wedge. Certainly not what I want from my driver! I have
tried teeing the ball low - as low as for a five wood, but the ball
still seems to balloon up. I never had this problem with my McGregors. Thinking
it was a fault with my swing, two weeks ago I bought a Nicklaus 5 wood and
the surprise is that this does not go nearly as high as the driver.
In fact hitting both clubs from the same low peg, my driver has a much
much higher trajectory. If it helps, I am now 62 and playing off 10.
Obviously at my age I do not want to sacrifice distance - hell, I need every yard
I
can get! Am I doing something wrong? Any help would be appreciated.
Kind Regards
Dave Harris

Hello Dave,
Jody says you must be using a 6 inch tee, but I don't think so.
Yesterday's fairways allowed for lots of roll, but today's fairways mostly
are softer, so you are not going to get as much roll with lower shots, so the
idea is to get a higher launch angle for more carry. However, if you want to
hit the ball lower, trade your driver in for the same model with less
loft and a stiffer shaft because in general the stiffer the shaft, the lower
the launch angle. I suspect your 5 wood has a stiffer shaft which might
explain why you hit it lower than your driver. It sounds like you are not doing
anything wrong, so you should never change your swing for a driver if you
can hit all your other clubs properly.
Joe

Question for the Evil Twin:

Jody, what do you think of Tiger Woods?
Answer: I don't know. I have never played that course. Where is
it?

Answer to the trivia question above: Woods-9, Mickelson-31,
Nicklaus-26,
Palmer-53, Norman-67, Watson-134.

Golf Potpourri

by

Mac Stevenson

Nine-Hole Rounds are Great in Winter

Many golfers are missing a bet by not playing more nine-hole
rounds when the weather is cool or worse. Where is it carved in
stone that you have to play 18 holes on every outing?

For most of us, fall and winter are busier than the summer
months; this is another good reason to play just nine holes on
occasion. It saves time. If you join a group as they turn onto
the back nine, it saves even more time because you don’t have to
spend a half hour getting ready to start on the front nine.
There’s a great difference between spending an hour and a half on
nine holes and four and a half hours for 18. For busy people,
nine holes can be the answer.

Nine-hole rounds during cool and cold weather have some added
benefits: You can play a relaxing round with no bets. It’s an
invigorating change of pace to just play nine holes and enjoy the
fall weather and camaraderie and good exercise. And, with no bets
on the line, you can experiment with some new shots that you
wouldn’t try if there was money at stake.

It’s easy to put your clubs in the closet and call it quits until
next spring. That’s a mistake. By playing nine holes when you can
find the time, you keep the muscles you use for golf toned and
you don’t lose all of the vital swing thoughts you’ve developed
over the summer. In addition, you won’t spend as many hours
atrophying on the couch with a sack of chips and can of beer.

Playing nine holes during cool weather is an excellent time to
walk, carrying a light bag with eight clubs. Riding on an
unenclosed cart during cold weather turns golf into torture
rather than enjoyment. When you forgo the cart, you won’t become
chilled and you’ll gain valuable exercise. It’s much easier to
walk nine holes in cool weather rather than the hot, humid air of
summer. And nine holes isn’t nearly as tiring as trying to hoof
it for 18.

Playing nine holes once or twice a week takes the place of
practicing during inclement weather. Going to the driving range
on nice days in the winter doesn’t result in any long-lasting
benefits. No matter what--in most of the country--you’re going to
be forced off the course for a week or two at a time during the
cold months. When this happens, any benefits you might derive
from practicing dissolve because of the inactivity. Consequently,
get out and walk nine holes and don’t worry about how you play.
Just enjoy the exercise and being outdoors.

Another reward for playing in less-than-perfect weather in the
fall and winter is that the course isn’t crowded and play moves
faster. The hackers and beginners--who can ruin the game for
everyone else--just come out on the gorgeous days in the spring
and summer.

An added benefit of playing only nine holes is that you can play
during the warmest part of the day. If you start in the morning,
it’s going to be cold until the sun is high in the sky. But for
about two hours in the early afternoon, it’s often quite pleasant
on the golf course.

By playing a few nine-hole rounds, you keep some semblance of
proficiency in your game for the 18-hole rounds you might want to
try on nice weekends. It’s a great way to get some exercise and
keep your mind tuned to the fundamentals of your game.

Richard’s Thoughts

Taking The Club Back Smoothly

Seventy five percent of the average player’s bad shots are caused
by his getting out of position on the backswing. He gets out of
position mainly for two reasons. Grabbing the club at the start
of the backswing and starting back abruptly. When you take the
club away from the ball abruptly, you destroy your normal tempo.
This of course invariably leads to getting into improper position
on the backswing. Experience has taught me that whenever I hit a
bad shot, it’s due to the fact that I put myself into a bad
position on the backswing.

Thus the importance of starting the
clubhead back smoothly from the ball can’t be overemphasized.
For the average golfer, this smooth takeaway is largely a matter
of concentration. Before starting your backswing, you must think
just what you want your hands to do with the club. This same
discipline applies to grabbing the club at the start; you have to
concentrate on not doing it. The average player is often too
impatient. He is thinking of hitting the ball before he even
gets the club back. A smooth takeaway, I might add, is just as
important in putting as in driving. You’ll find you’ll yip far
fewer putts.

Until next week…good golfing!
