Questions and Answers by Teaching Pro Mr Joe DeLorenzo THANK YOU
for taking your time to answer these Joe.

golfwithjoey@yahoo.com

Joe,
I would like to know how to handicap, alternate stroke play for a
2 person team. What percentage of a person's handicap is used. This
format will beused in a member-member tournament to be played in July in South
Carolina.I feel this will speed up play when the temperature is in the 90"s.
Thank you,
Joan Strasser

Hello Joan,
The official rules of golf do not say anything specific about
this, so the local rules take precedence. One simple example might be to
simply add up the handicaps of both players and use the sum for the team, or
average them, your choice. Personally, I never cared much for alternate stroke
play because you are paying two greens fees to play one ball, you only
get to hit half the shots. For the money, I would much prefer playing every
shot, but that's just me. Also, if your partner is having a bad day, there
is very little you can do to save the team unless you hole everything,
and then your partner feels guilty, and then you feel bad, etc. I don't mean
to rain on your picnic, I just prefer the scramble format, that way nobody
has to feel guilty for bad shots. If speeding up play is the issue, you can
make other local rules, such as max-double-bogey (pick it up if you do not
hole the bogey shot), and max 3-putt (pick it up if you do not hole the
second putt).
Have fun!
Joe

Joe,
I have been playing golf about 18 months now with a 20 handicap.
I am having a problem with distance. When I hit my lofted clubs and wedges
the ball flies straight but the ball is really high. I just do not get the
carry I feel I should. For instance a 160 yard shot I am using a seven
iron. My mid and long irons have good distance but also fly really high.. What
in your opinion could be the cause? Also any ideas on exercises that could cure the
problem? Thanks for any help you can give.........
Sean

Hi Sean,
This sounds like a nice "problem" to have. Lots of people would
love to hit their shots high and straight. You should have no problem holding
any green. However, since you want more distance, there are some things you
could try. First of all, if you have older clubs, the lofts may be higher
than modern clubs. Borrow another set at a range and see if you get the same
or different results. If that is not the case, you may need a more
aggressive weight shift to the front foot on your downswing. If you are
looking for exercises and drills, the Body Golf videos have some excellent
examples.
Joe

Joe,
I have one question for you. How I make good swing if my body
only 165 cm high and 64 kg weight.
Thanx alot
Usman

Hello Usman,
Let's see, if my math serves me right, you are about 5 feet 5
inches tall and you weigh about 140 pounds. There is no reason you cannot
make a good swing no matter how tall or how short you happen to be. You can
study the swings of shorter golfers like Gary Player, Ian Woosnam, or Corey
Pavin, or you can study the mechanics of the LPGA players, who are living
proof that your size is not a factor to be a good player. Another good
choice, of course, would be to study the Body Golf videos.
Joe

Joe,
I keep reading about how the speed of a green is measured with a
Stimpmeter. How does this work, when did they start using this, and who
invented it?
Jill

Hi Jill,
The Stimpmeter was conceived by Edward Stimpson back in the
1970's, but was not accepted by the USGA until 1997. It's really quite simple.
The higher the number, the faster the green. 7 would be slow, 8 would be
medium, and 9 would be fast. Tournament speeds are over 10. The device
consists of a 36 inch aluminum rail with a notch (to hold a ball) 6 inches from
one end. The rail is slowly raised until gravity releases the ball (at about
20 degrees elevation), sending it to roll the remaining 30 inches down the
rail onto the green (at a fairly level place) and the roll distance is
measured. This is repeated for the opposite direction, 3 balls for each
direction. The middle ball for each direction is measured, and the average for
both directions becomes the official reading, in feet, so if a green
is "stimped" at 9.5, the ball must have rolled 9.5 feet.
Joe

Question for the Evil Twin:
Jody, which shots are your favorites?
Answer: The mulligan, the foot wedge, and the conceded putt

The Weak Chip

To keep your left wrists from collapsing on chips, weaken the
grip of your left hand.
This doesn’t mean you should grip less tightly. Weakening the
grip means that you should move your left hand to the left, in a
counterclockwise direction. If your wrists had broken, your left
hand would have moved to the position it now occupies, so you’ve
effectively taken the break out of your wrists.

Notice also that the back of your left hand now faces down your
target line. Keep the hand moving toward the target when you
chip, and you’ll be right on line.

A Compatible Foursome is a Gift

by
Mac Stevenson

Although it is a rewarding experience to be part of a fun
foursome, it can be a bad deal if you get trapped in a group that
doesn’t get along.

Choose your regular foursome with the greatest of care; it’s
difficult to extricate yourself from a foursome you don’t enjoy
without making some lasting enemies.

No one wants to become cliquish, but we all have the right to try
and find an everyday foursome that is enjoyable to play with.
It’s a fine line between being too particular and not selective
enough.

Most golfers--not all but most--are fine folks who are a pleasure
to be around. There’s something about the nature of the sport
that draws quality people to the game.

One guy or gal that doesn’t fit can ruin the day for the other
players in the foursome. It’s easier to weed out players who
won’t be an asset to your playing group before they become
entrenched as regular members. This can be done in a diplomatic
manner that doesn’t cause any hard feelings for anyone.

When you’re thinking about becoming a regular member of a
foursome, you should consider if you’ll fit in. It helps if the
members of a foursome have some of the same interests off the
golf course and a similar seriousness about the game. And it’s
best if all the players have similar skill levels so the matches
will be even and fair; however, handicaps that are where they
should be are a great equalizer. No one should win all the time.

The members of some foursomes are out to just kid around and have
a good time, and that’s perfectly okay so long as everyone is on
the same page. This approach may be all wrong for you.

Don’t take yourself too seriously. Even if you receive a bad
first impression, you’ll find that most of your fellow golfers
are enjoyable to play with after a few rounds together.

Tournaments and special events at the course where you play
regularly are great opportunities to become acquainted with other
golfers without committing yourself to a regular game. And it’s a
lot of fun to play with different players even if you have a
favorite foursome; this will make you appreciate your regular
group even more. It’s like going on a vacation--the best part is
coming home.

Scrambles tournaments (mixed--guys and gals, or regular) are a
great way to meet new players. Everyone is pulling for each other
as a team in this format, and it’s a great method for making new
friends.

If you’re looking for a different group to join or you’re new to
the course where you’re playing, don’t expect to find a regular
group to play with overnight. It takes some time and effort on
your part.

When you’re a regular at your club, don’t leave someone on the
putting clock when you have room in your group. This great game
of golf takes everyone working together to make it the uplifting
experience for all players that it should be. Try and put
yourself in the other person’s situation and treat him or her the
way you would like to be treated.

How do you develop a friendly rapport with other golfers you
don’t know very well? One good way is to join a twosome or
threesome when it’s convenient to all concerned. You can often
join a group on the back nine if you’ve gotten to the course late
and only plan on playing nine holes. Of course, you’ll have to
ask permission to join the group and sometimes that doesn’t work
out. If you receive a rude rejection, just consider the source
and make sure to avoid those players in the future.

Having a regular foursome that you enjoy playing with several
times a week is a gift to be treasured, but don’t become so
discriminatory as a group that you never play with anyone else.
You’ll miss a chance to meet some great people and make good
friends

Richard’s Thoughts

How To Destroy Your Golfing Delusions

In golf we must often be on guard against ourselves. We think we
are doing one thing when actually we are doing something else.
We can have images of our golf swings which do not conform with
the facts. We tend to believe we have excellencies which do not
exist. Sometimes we believe we have deficiencies which are not
there, and even change a swing that is all right to begin with.

For instance, a number of golfers have advocated that the arms be
held as closely together as possible. An aid to doing this is to
keep the elbows together. Hogan’s description of the position is
that the arms are pressed together as if held by a piece of
rubber. This seems theoretically sound to us since it tends to
remove the variable of loose arms.

Several years ago I read of this need to keep the arms pressed
toward each other with the pit of the elbows facing upwards. I
tried it but my swing became constricted and I lost distance.
When I showed a friend what I had been doing and what I was now
doing, he said that I had been doing it right the first time.

To correct your golfing image, the best bet is to get some good
training videos that you can understand and watch and use them
religiously. So many times we purchase golf training videos,
watch them one time and expect to lower our score by 10 strokes.
This is not the way it is. You need to watch the videos,
practice what you have learned and watch them again.

Just one viewing is not enough!

Until next week…good golfing!
